Sandra Carter, M.A., MPH, Ph.D., Managing Director

Dr.  Sandra Carter has spent the past 30 years dedicated to the improvement of health and wellness at an individual, community and national level. Her career spans experience in Canada and the United States as a teacher, researcher, administrator and entrepreneur. She has advanced Masters degrees in Exercise Physiology (McGill University) and Public Health (UCLA), and a Ph.D. in Preventive Medicine (USC). Her combined knowledge and experience in health behavior, program development and communications provides enormous insight for product development with M2 Ingredients. Dr. Carter has participated in large population studies, supported by the Center for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health. She has extensive corporate health program development and administration experience in a variety of business and government settings through her work with the American Heart Association and UCLA Center for Health Enhancement. As the Administrative Director for Tahoe Forest Health System, Dr. Carter had oversight for multiple departments including Physical Therapy, Community Health, Diabetic Health, Health Promotions, Occupational Health, Sports Performance and Oncology and was a key to the development of a new women’s diagnostic service center.  Her administrative experience in health related industry has positioned her to be a dynamic leader for M2 Ingredients.

Steve Farrar, Chief Operating Officer

Steve Farrar’s life work has been dedicated to horticulture.  Since obtaining his Master’s in Horticulture from Washington State University in 1981, he has since applied his expertise to the development of  production methodologies for both fresh and mycelia mass  mushrooms products.   In 1987 Steve oversaw design, construction, startup and operation of a specialty mushroom farm that produced common oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus), Enoki (Flammulina velutipes), Shiitake (Lentinula edodes), Beech (Hypsizygus marmoreus), King Trumpet (Pleurotus eryngii) and Maitake (Grifola frondosa) mushrooms for fresh, culinary market.  He supervised technology transfer of “Polypropylene bottle production technology” for mushrooms from Japanese company, Hokuto Sangyo, the largest mushroom company in Japan to an American based counterpart . Served as exclusive sales representative for “outside of Asia” sales of Hokuto technology and equipment.  Sold production systems and provided consultation to mushroom producers in Pennsylvania, Oregon, California, UK and Spain. Diversified the production of fresh mushrooms to include production of products for dietary supplements and functional food ingredients

Steve developed proprietary Solid State Fermentation production methodology and equipment for production of medicinal mushrooms on organic substrate and traveled worldwide (Taiwan, Japan, Europe, USA, Canada) to evaluate, select and obtain fungal tissues cultures for propagation and production of Antrodia camphorata, Agaricus blazei, Cordyceps militaris, Ganoderma lucidum, Grifola frondosa, Hericium erinaceus, Hypsizygus marmoreus, Lentinula edodes, Pleurotus eryngii and Trametes versicolor medicinal mushroom species.  Steve is responsible for developing the  Organic System Plan and obtained 100% Organic certification status for all products in 2006.

Miguel Chavez, Vice President of Production

Miguel Chavez graduated from University Autonomous of Baja California (UABC),  with  a BS degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering  specializing in Electronics, receiving  subsequent additional professional training for Industrial Engineering degree/certificate. Miguel  has over sixteen years experience with the production of fresh asian mushrooms, working  initially as Engineer/Electrician for production facility expansion, then as Maintenance & Repair Technician and Mushroom Production Manager.  In 2001, Miguel traveled to Japan for specialized training in Japanese Mushroom Production Technology from Hokto Sangyo Corporatio.  Since 2006 Miguel  has assisted in the development of production methodologies for production of nutraceutical medicinal mushroom products, installing production and processing equipment and supervising production, processing and packaging, and storage of 10 species of medicinal mushrooms

Tara Farrar, Logistics Manager

Tara graduated cum laude with a Bachelors of Arts from California State University San Marcos in 2005. Daughter of Mycologist Steve Farrar, Tara has a lifetime of familiarity with mushrooms and mycology.  She has in-depth experience with all areas of the company including; fulfillment, sales, customer service, graphic arts, shopping cart maintenance, logistics and shipping.
